From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3—Parents, teachers, and curious children will be fascinated by this excellent introduction to birds. The chapter divisions reflect the features and behavior of a broad range of birds. End-of-chapter games and interactive questions encourage children to personally engage with the subject matter, while the "Parent Tips" section provides activity ideas and further resources. Sidebars with basic information about specific avian species also show the scale of those birds by depicting the animals next to a child's hand. Subject headings, a wealth of fact boxes, a glossary, and an index make this a great choice for teaching nonfiction text features. Use a small section for read-alouds or storytime and then encourage children to pore over the pages on their own. VERDICT Lush nature photography, concise language, a large print size, and a browsable layout: this offering is ideal for home, school, and library use.—Rachel Anne Mencke, St. Matthew's Parish School, Pacific Palisades, CA

Great book for our 4 year old who is interested in space.

The FIRST TIME I bought this book I noticed many reviews mentioning the poor binding and pages falling out after a relatively short time, but the reviews of the book were very positive. My then 2-1/2 year old took to this book immediately and it ultimately led to a space-fascination (complete with planets hanging from his ceiling, a birthday party at a space museum, multiple trips to the planetarium, etc...). I will say he learned the names of the planets by heart simply by me reading to him and him "reading" it constantly thereafter. While he obviously doesn't read, he quickly learned every planet based on its first letter. He blew people away when after reciting every planet in order, stating which one's were rocky and which were gaseous and continued by reciting all of the "dwarf" planets, as well. He can also identify various nebula's based on their shape. We hobbled along by taping pages back into the book for almost a year as his space-phase seemed to gradually diminish. But sure enough, while going through his drawer his interest in the book was sparked again. This time he is more aware and thoroughly perturbed from the tape now failing and the pages once again falling out. He's almost 4 and as much as it aggravates me out of principal to have to buy it again, I like that it keeps his interest in reading. He even "pretends" to read aloud by reciting what he thinks the words say. I'm thankful in that sense, but it still is not a reason to distribute books with poorly made bindings as this one is - especially from National Geographic (come on, so many people have those old National Geographic books for decades - why wouldn't they use the same process?? lol). In summary - a great book to cultivate a toddlers interest but expect the pages to fall out within a few months of use. Sorry, but part of the review process is to take all aspects of the product into account and this major issue is a big deduct.NOTE: I purchased this item on Amazon for full price. I try to write helpful, unbiased and insightful reviews because I also read reviews prior to making my own buying decisions. I notice many reviews lack helpful information, are not well written or give poor reviews based on not reading directions or failing to read the product details prior to purchasing. Writing valuable reviews helps pay it forward.

Got this for my 6 year old daughter after intoducing her to the tv show the Magic School Bus because she was extremely excited by the idea of space and our solar system. She absolutely LOVES it! We read it twice in the past three days and she can also read about half of it on her own.

As many others have noted this book falls apart completely at the binding. My son has never had a problem with a book like this one.Buy a different book. Very disappointed.

I got this for my 5 year old who is just getting interested in space and he loves it! He found the first chapter a bit boring (viewing stars and planets from Earth, how the Earth’s orbit affects night/day and seasons, etc). But he loved the rest of the book — each planet has 4 pages devoted to it, and there are additional pages on other space objects like dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, nebulas, etc. Most illustrations are realistic drawings, but a few are photos taken by telescopes and probes. For each planet, things like size, terrain/atmosphere, temperature, moons, satellites/probes sent to the planet (up through 2016-2017!), etc are discussed. He was interested in this book enough that we could read nearly all the text without getting bored. (He is not yet reading but listened to me read it all.) For younger kids or kids not as interested in space, you could simply name each planet/object and maybe read a few facts from the text.

My daughter is 2 years and 4 months old and she started showing her interest to nonfiction book since she was 18 months old. She prefers real photographs better than illustrations and this serious of books give her what she likes the best. This Little Kids First Big Book of Birds is a great addition to our collection of "First Big Book" and my daughter enjoys identifying different animals, fish, bugs and birds as she turning the pages.I look forward for the day that she could read those words herself!

My 5 year old son is totally infatuated with space. He wants his 6th birthday to be a space adventure where all of his friends and family go to space to celebrate with him (smile). While we can't do that, I have gone on a quest to buy him as many resources about space as possible. This book is very big. It is wonderfully vibrant, with amazing imagery. The write ups are easy enough for him to understand and articulate back to us after he reads them. The book contains a wealth of knowledge about aspects of the solar system I didn't know existed, so it becomes a tool for us to learn together. We use the book as a starting point to search YouTube for videos. It is one of his favorite night time reading books, and he even runs around the house with it showing new and amazing things to anyone who will listen. It is a joy to watch him grow in his knowledge and appreciation for space exploration. If I could give this book 10 stars I would.

Within 10 days of having this book the pages began falling out. Numerous have fallen out since and I can honestly say that we have not been rough handling this book.
