This book is a quick read. It is lighthearted yet carries with it the deep emotions of war. It combines the elation of flying and fighting, yet also, touches of the profound sense of loss he experiences when loosing a squad mate. There are moments of intense emotional sureness and aggressiveness, countered by moments of reflection and introspection. It covers the battle of Dunkirk, the channel conflicts, and The Battle of Britain (though none of this is expressly stated, one must keep in mind the time frame mentioned and apply that to the timeline of the war yourself). I thought there could have been a few annotations added by the editor to clarify the time line and a few other things that non-savy WW2 might find confusing. There also could have been a small appendix of flying terms and aircraft descriptions, again for the unfamiliar. All that aside the content is very entertaining and the descriptions of the air combat male this book a fun and easy read (not all war memoir's are easy to read. Coupled with the look into air squadron life during the time makes it a book that is awesome to read if you enjoy air combat, and stirring when you think the scale of loss and bravery of these young men.

Excellent account of the life of a Battle of Britain pilot. Flt Lt Crook may not have taken part in the biggest or most critical of the individual battles, and the descriptions of arial warfare are somewhat subdued, but the fact that this was written by an active participant from fresh memories and diary entries made during the battle, and published while the war still raged make it supremely interesting. Written in what seems typically British subdued style, his account is self-effacing and with understood, but not overtly obvious feelings of sadness at the loss of friends and comrades. Crook did a commendable job of chronicling his experience and impressions of flying a Spitfire during that crucial time in Britain's history. Well worth reading.

This is not the full story of the Battle of Britain. It's a very authentic account of one Spitfire pilots experiences during that battle. He provided good descriptions of aerial combat from a fighter pilots perspective written in 1942, only two years after the battle. I was surprised to learn that the spitfire had such a high kill ratio to German fighters. No wonder the Brits won the Battle of Britain. I remember my father, who was a B-17 pilot say that "Spit 9's" would escort them to the French coast. That didn't do much good for them! So the Spitfire didn't have much legs and had limited use for the rest of the war but seemed to be the perfect machine for the Battle of Britain.

Decorated Flight-Lieutenant David Crook recounts his participation in the Battle of Britain with this quick, easy read. The author kept a diary during this period in his life, and we are privy to his adventures as well as some of his inner thoughts concerning air battle, shooting down enemy flyers (as well as losing fellow aviators), and the fast learning curve of those who discovered how to survive a dogfight.Flight-Lieutenant Crook’s breezy style entertains as well as illuminates. Anyone desiring to gain some knowledge of this period in history but is leery of heavy historical reading should find this book to be a welcome source of intimate facts and anecdotes. This chronological memoir focuses on his personal reflections of what happened rather than an analytical examination of history. It would be a great start for those new to this era as well as a positive addition to anyone’s WWII library. Five stars.

Nothing like a firsthand account. Crook has a jolly good time flying and shooting down the Hun in between being grief-stricken while attending funerals for his many fallen comrades. The book is very short and doesn't go into the subjects at hand in any detail. It was first published in 1942 and assumes that the reader lived through the battle and is already familiar with the details thereof. The modern reader is not, and so some annotation and a map would be of great help. However, the reader easily understands how a fighter pilot develops his skills, provided he lives long enough to do so. Crook also makes clear the ghastly mortality rate the pilots accepted as part of their job.

A great account of a British pilot and his areal adventures against the onslaught of the Wehrmacht during the Battle of Britain from its very beginning thru to the end. It provides the reader with a good understanding of the efforts the relatively few pilots endured to save England from German invasion. England owed its existence to such brave and daring young boys and this read is a good personal account of both time on the ground and in the air fighting incredible battles. Clearly one of few survivors..

An interesting account of the life of a military fighter pilot during the battle of Britain. Follow this warrior from flight school through deadly air battles over his home territory, experience his grief as he loses friends and fellow pilots to the well trained and seasoned pilots of the German Luftwaffe, also experience his joy and excitement as he describes his first and subsequent "kills" in the air. I recommend this book to all who have interest in the air war that raged during the turbulent years of WWII.

This journal account of an RAF pilot's flying experiences, written during the Battle of Britain, is, to this pilot, very good. The flying and personal relationships with his contemporaries are believable. To be able to maintain high spirits during this darkest time in history for Britain is remarkable.I know a WWll Spitfire pilot who, today, speaks poetically of his "Spit" even though it's been 73 years since he sat in her. This account mirrors that feeling for the aircraft.
