But whenever he hears the sound of the train whistle, he is ready to jump back on board for another adventure. Fenton's tale is a charming look at a small slice of history. A brief note about the real-life Bob, whose photo is still hanging at the Adelaide Station in Australia and whose collar is on display at Australia's National Railway Museum in Port Adelaide, is appended. McLean's detailed illustrations, which are done in watercolor, charcoal, and pencil, bring historical Australia to life, depicting both the vastness of the sprawling outback and also the growing railroad system and cities. The artwork is really great, but the story itself is only mediocre. However, from what I could tell looking at it on line I rather figured it might be fairly basic. I bought the book anyway because of one important reason. My 4.5 year old grandson loves stories and I love to make up stories to tell him. I thought the notion of all the adventures Bob the Railway Dog might have would offer lots of material for stories, and it means my grandson and I have to research some info about Australia so we know where to set the adventures we dream up for Bob. So, I am happy with the purchase.
