For a recent trip to Vancouver I bought two travel guides, this one the Fodor's and the Lonely Planet. In this book Fodor's gives you a good but somewhat dry descriptions of the Vancouver/Victoria area, with emphasis on areas like Whistler and surrounding areas. Lots of details, lists of hotels, which was nice since I found my hotel listed with the area's best, and restaurants for all areas. But the whole time it really doesn't give you much to look forward to other than Stanley Park. The book felt very dry and lifeless.
Great all-around book with a lot of helpful info, tips, and great unbiased reviews of many places to go and things to do in Vancouver. I wish it came with a fold out map that can be detached, that would've given it a 5 star in my opinion. Good little individual maps throughout the book, though. Great information, and from looking up much info online, it seems very up to date and accurate. I found out about alot of places I otherwise would've thought to explore after reading through this. I have so many pages marked with little post it tags, I'm going to have a very filled, busy vacation!
Fodors travel guides are generally well regarded for locations around the world. We found this one to be very well thought out and useful for its summaries of tourist attractions and accommodations. We stayed at one of the Victoria B&B's reviewed here and found the place delightful and our host a genuinely collectable character.
Generally their recommended restaurants and attractions were spot on. Only in a couple of instances, their information was outdated and the recommended places had closed or had gone down hill since their reviewer was there. The guide paid for itself several times over by helping us to find the best quality place in the particular area we were visiting(especially in rural areas of Vancouver Island.
If you're not a native, this book helps greatly. It gave great advice on parks. There were several parks in the area (both hiking & strolling, watch the beautiful sunset kind of parks) we would not have found except for the book. It's advice on restaurants was current & accurate. As time goes by from these reviews, make certain you buy whatever edition is current. One thing the book did not prepare me for (no book probably could have) was the prices of ordinary things. Ie: food at the grocery store, aspirin, etc. Unless you live in New York City, you may get a little sticker shock when you pick up the odds and ends. Also, recommend drawing Canadian $$'s from ATM's once you get there, you'll get a much better exchange rate. Have fun!
Very helpful on my recent trip to Victoria. I depended on it for referrals to restaurants and sightseeing, and was never disappointed. Highly recommended.
Great book, very informational, many pictures and maps and good ideas about how to spend a few days in Vancouver. I like the fact that it is not all about shopping like many of these guides. It actually has lots of very helpful information.
I've used this book for Victoria, and felt it was quite useful. For restaurant choices Yelp is probably better, but this book lists tons of places to visit and things to do.
