About the Author
Carlos E. Wilton has served as Pastor of the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, since 1990. He teaches polity classes at Princeton Theological Seminary and New Brunswick Theological Seminary and is Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Monmouth. He is the editor of Hear My Voice: Preaching the Lectionary Psalms and the author of the Lectionary Preaching Workbook, Series VIII (Cycles A, B, and C). He is senior illustrations writer for Homiletics magazine.

Principles of Presbyterian Polity is a wonderful blessing for all Presbyterians. Wilton brings a wealth of experience as a gifted pastor, a respected presbytery stated clerk, a wonderful teacher of Presbyterian polity at Princeton and New Brunswick seminaries, and an excellent preacher and writer who was predestined to write this book! I hope his book will be found in every church library and pastor's library when it is not being read, shared and discussed. I recommend this book as very helpful reading for pastors, ruling elders, deacons and all who want to better understand and live faithfully as Presbyterians. Today the majority of Presbyterians did not grow up in the denomination, and even those who did so do not necessarily understand fully our form of church government; to all of them, this book is a gift. The author understands that learning our church's governing principles is not an end unto itself, but a way to help the church more faithfully serve God in the church and the world. Our PCUSA Confession of 1967 says it well, "The church thus orders its life as an institution with a constitution, government, officers, and administrative rules. These are instruments of mission, not ends in themselves. Different orders have served the gospel, and none can claim exclusive validity. A Presbyterian polity recognizes the responsibility of all members for ministry and maintains the organic relation of all congregations in the church. It seeks to protect the church from exploitation by ecclesiastical or secular power and ambition. Carlos Wilton has been on top of this topic for a very long time, in the trenches of the presbytery, whee it matters. Often he has been the wise voice of reason, and has a sense not of "rules are rules," but rather the nobler aims of our polity, in ensuring processes that lead to a more graceful, participatory community. A must for the shelf every Presbyterian ordained minister or elder.
Though I have only started the book, it is well written with important historical information that explains the historical reasons behind the Presbyterian form of government. I heartily recommend it to all Presbyterian Pastors, Ruling Elders, and Deacons.
This is a timely and wonderful book. The genius of it is that Wilton takes the basic principles of Presbyterian polity and shows how they are expressed and reflected in the many different specific practices, policies, and procedures in ecclesiastical life. Presbyterians are, of course, known for giving careful attention to the ways in which we gather for decision-making. Wilton's book reaches beyond what many consider to be a boring and toxic obsession with "governance," and shows how our polity actually allows mission to happen in an organized and circumspect way. He demonstrates how our polity is about inclusion of all voices, and militates against both chaos and authoritarianism. He also connects how and why we do things to the history of polity development. Finally, I hope this book even reaches beyond the Presbyterian tribe, and enhances the conversation about the formation and cultivation of vibrant faith communities across denominational lines.
Carlos Wilton has prepared a valuable tool in his Principles of Presbyterian Polity . It is, however, not a book for the reader looking for an easy crutch or convenient club to resolve some short-term problem in the congregation. This is a book with a deep background, a long history and a thought-necessitating approach to the Presbyterian heritage of pursuing the truth of human community through shared power and community responsibility. Wilton is qualified by study and experience to write this book and his approach to the task reflects the legacy of the Reformation saints as well as the recently revised Constitution.
