Marketed as a “biblically accurate biography”, I had some issues with this particular installment in the series. Although I understand the author’s intent to portray David as the “man after God’s own heart” role model that he was, I felt that there was not enough acknowledgement of his mistakes. For instance, the entire episode with Bathsheba and Uriah and the fact that David had many wives were both left out entirely. While these are not necessarily age appropriate fodder for 8-12 year olds, I think that some sensitive mention could be made regarding David’s struggle with sin; it seemed that David was written too idealistically. The biographical section of the book was, in my opinion, a bit confusing and dry for adolescents; the “clues” contained details critical to the story rather than shedding additional light on the narrative, and there was no real tie-in between David’s story and the reader until the power-ups section at the end of the book. Engaging the reader in David’s life story would have made it more appealing and interesting, and including some basic maps along with the nicely-done illustrations would have dispelled some of the confusion of David’s often nomadic life. With all of that being said, however, I honestly did not entirely dislike this book. I think that with a few tweaks it could be as wonderful as some of the others in this series. As it is, I would highly recommend that adults read this story with their kids to answer questions and make things more clear, as well as to help with name pronunciation. This would make a nice study for Vacation Bible School or Sunday School, especially by using each of the ten “power-up” lessons and each one’s accompanying Bible verse as a guide and structuring in the relevant parts of David’s story with each.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

While so many of the current Children's Bibles are summaries of Bible Stories, these books, "The Kingdom Files" are summaries of Bible Figures/Characters. It takes your child a step further by providing a mini-devotional (Power File) in the back that applies to the summary that was read (Action File).I got this book because I have two little ones as well as two between the ages of 8-11 (which is what this book is written for). My Big Kids like mysteries and so I thought the Kingdom Files would be something for them.It was ok for my older kids but may be great for the younger of the age bracket. My favorite part of this book is the Power File. I Love this! The format goes: Power-Up #__ , which is a truth from the Bible (like: God looks at people's hearts. We should too). Followed by a description of the truth. Followed by a sentence or two about how it applied to David's life. Then a Memory Verse follows. I'm always looking for memory verses for the kids and the fact that they can read about how it applied to the character is fantastic. Love, Love, Loved this part.I feel like the idea is great but the marketing misses the mark. When I read, "Who was ____" with Clues and a file, I expect to find some kind of something to solve. I would have loved to see spaces for the kids to search the text for truths using the Clues. Instead, the "clues" are just more of the story being told; not really "clues" at all.Perhaps I would have liked to have seen this go more the route of a Bible Study or re-market it for an age bracket of 5-8."I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review."

My daughter has really enjoyed the "Who Was" series from our local library, and I was excited to learn that author Matt Koceich has come out with something similar but with Biblical characters.Each book tells the life story of a biblical character and reads like a biography that is separated into three sections--Fact File (key information), Action File (events of the character's life), and Power File (memory verse and application for your life). Clue boxes appear along the way and give applications from the story. These books are for kids ages 8-12.I thought the stories were a good re-telling of the facts from Scripture so that kids can get a total understanding of the main character being discussed. But I wish the stories were less dry and more engaging for the reader. On the other hand, the power-up section in the back of the book would be a great talking tool to use with your kids as you discuss the book together.In Who Was David? I thought that this book could of really used a map to help the reader follow along. In the Power-up section in the back of the book, power-up #4 talks about God being with you which is a great lesson we can learn from the life of David. But I didn't like what was emphasized in this paragraph: "After David defeated Goliath, the king invited him in to be a part of his team. Saul sent David out on missions, and David was always successful. So Saul gave David a high rank in the army. David found success in all things he did because God was right there with him." It's almost like he's saying that if God is with you, then you will always be successful. The main idea is not that because we have God, we will be successful with whatever we do--soccer games, life going well, etc. God was the One Who worked through David because David obeyed. I wish this would of been said a little differently since success is looked at in such a different way by our culture. Overall, I think the series is a great idea in helping kids get familiar with the character's complete story from Scripture instead of just knowing about them from one story of their lives.The following is a list of the other books in this series: Who is Jesus?, Who was Daniel?, Who was Jonah?, Who was Mary, Mother of Jesus?
