I bought Mark Kistler's Draw Squad based on my experience with some of his other books. This book deals more with Draw Squad as a program than focusing specifically on drawing. Therefore, the art instructions need to be "pulled" out of the book. I would thoroughly recommend You Can Draw in 30 Days. It provides a sound foundation in drawing skills. Along with that I would recommend Ed Emberley's Great Thumbprint Drawing Book as a very beginning book, and then his Jumbo Jamboree book, and then Kistler's You Can Draw in 30 Days, all three of these books for those who have become convinced that they can't draw.
Wow! What an amazing book. I watched Mark Kistler only a few times (by chance) when I was growing up. I'm not even sure what made me find this title today. My whole family is now using this book, to "draw, draw, draw!"My kids are 6 & 7 years old. We have now become members of Mark's draw 3d dot come website. The book and its exercises are so much fun! Very inspirational, and we have seen dramatic improvement in our drawing and perception, in just a few days! I can't wait to see the amazing results that are sure to come from following along with this book.Mark's writing style and personality shine through in this entertaining and informative book. My kids were rolling on the floor, when the list of "supplies you will need," included a banana: "I prefer the yellow ones, with a few brown freckles. Use a felt-tipped marker to draw a face on it! But make sure you peel it immediately, so the poison doesn't leak through, leading to the arrest of the drawing maniac who suggested you write on your banana!" Hahahaha... The kids are still laughing at that one.
My kids love this book! We used it as our summer textbook for what I jokingly call "Mom's School". Wanting my kids to learn how to draw, we did about 3 lessons a week together. One of my kids still draws the pictures that he learned that summer, which was 2 years ago. Originally I had borrowed the book from a library, but now I purchased my own copy so we can finish all of the lessons in it together this summer. What a fun and educational book.
This is a great drawing book. I used to watch his show as a kid and loved it. Now I have two little kids and we looked up his old shows on YouTube. They started drawing the things on his show and really enjoyed it. I decided to look online and see if I could find this book and sure enough it is still out there. So I ordered it and the kids have been drawing all the lessons. The thing I really like about his drawing style is that he teaches you the fundamentals of drawing. Now that I am adult I still remember a lot of his techniques and use them while I draw on the board as a teacher.This book would make a great gift to any kid who loves to draw.
If you are looking for a place to start learning to draw, and the books you have seen before only make it harder, your search is over. Mark makes it easy for anyone at any age to get basic drawing skills, the building blocks you need to get started. He teaches the skills that other books make seem complex, without the stress or making it go over your head. His way of teaching is simply the easiest method a person can have to start drawing. And if the books are good, his old show on PBS and his videos are even better. Mark makes drawing so fun kids beg to use the book again and again. He does not start by intimidating you with the completed project, in fact you don't always know what you are drawing until you are done. He takes you one line, circle, or square at a time and before you know it you have a fun drawing. I also reccommend you try the books from Ed Emberly, or check my lists on Amazon for kids that want to learn to draw, or be a cartoonist or animator.
Especially in this "got-to-have-it-now" modern cyber space world. I grew up watching Commander Mark and "The Secret City" on my local Public Broadcasting Station, and credit Mark Kistler's positive re-enforcement in the world of drawing that I didn't recieve during my tenure in various public schools, either. No art class in Jr. High or that of High School even instilled positive artistic abilities like Mark Kistler had done. Whether a person is a seasoned pro with a no. 2 pencil or just want to venture in the wonderful world of drawing, I highly recommend this book for anybody of all ages.
A good learn how to draw book, but not what I'm looking for. And the TV shows back in the 1980's was fun to watch too. Have fun. = Just drawing and not learning book. April 2018 review.
I loved this book back when the show was on TV (re-runs) and I still buy it for presents for the artistic children I know.Not just for kids... it is great for anyone who wants to learn shading and make their doodles stand out.
